New Year's Skincare Resolutions
It’s that time of the year again—New Year’s resolutions! When contemplating what to aim for in 2021, be sure to make yourself a New Year skin care goal. Skin is the body’s largest organ, so it needs to be given extra love and care. Kick those bad skincare habits to the curb and start your journey to healthier, glowier skin with the help of these 7 resolutions.
Resolution #1: Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day
Even during winter when you can’t see the sun or feel the warm rays hitting your skin, it’s still there. You need to wear sunscreen year-round, as up to 80% of UV rays can reach your skin even on cloudy days. Dermatologists, estheticians, and skin care experts everywhere are in unanimous agreement when claiming the sun to be the most detrimental threat to the health of our skin. Harmful UVA and UVB rays wreak havoc on our delicate skin and lead to wrinkles, rough patches, dark spots, fine lines, and premature aging. Always apply sunscreen as the last step of your morning skincare routine. No excuses!

Resolution #3: Properly Apply Your Skincare Products
Applying your products in the proper order maximizes their overall effectiveness, which means you’ll get more bang for your buck. The general rule of thumb is to start from thinnest to thickest. Learn how to layer your products in our blog post here.
Resolution #4: Reduce Excess Oiliness the Right Way
Those with oily or acne-prone skin often mistakenly believe that drying out their skin will reduce their oiliness. We hate to break it to you, but drying out your skin will only INCREASE oil production! Instead, use products that help control oil without disrupting the skin barrier, and keep your skin hydrated and moisturized.
Resolution #5: Leave Your Breakouts Alone
Guilty of picking or popping pimples? It’s time to break the habit! Picking or popping pimples can lead to skin damage and may even cause a new breakout. Keep your hands off your face and let your skincare products do all the work!

Resolution #6: Toss Out Old Cosmetics
Start the new year fresh by doing a clean sweep and clearing out all of your old cosmetics. Why? Most people are unaware that most makeup has a shelf life and continue to wear makeup that’s way past its expiration date. You wouldn’t eat food that’s gone bad, so why would you apply deteriorated products to your face? Unused, air-tight products should be fine, but look for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol, which indicates how many months a product can be used after being opened. Just remember to do your best to protect Mother Earth and recycle the products you're throwing out. To do so, you can:
- Clean your old makeup thoroughly, by washing it and then proceed to recycle the plastic or glass containers. You can also reuse any glass packaging and store your favorite tea in it.
- Check if the brand has a recycling program.
- To reduce your carbon footprint, try to use makeup that’s vegan, free of toxins and that has minimal packaging.
Resolution #7: Clean Your Makeup Brushes Regularly
Makeup brushes and applicators are a breeding ground for bacteria, which can worsen breakouts or cause new ones. Wash your beauty tools at least once a week with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
